Bird data as a public good.

We're building FreeBirder to turn the world's birders into a distributed sensor network — designed to direct observation effort into the regions where data is thinnest, and to help keep the open record clean at scale.

What we're building

01Engagement

We make contributing observations rewarding — and we're building the tools to channel that effort toward the regions and species where each new record adds the most.

02Coverage

Built on two billion-plus observations, it's designed to help a diffuse community become something closer to a coordinated, self-improving sensor network.

03Integrity

We're building detection systems to flag fraudulent and anomalous records, so data quality holds as participation grows.

The improved data won't be ours to keep. It's meant to flow back into the open record — free through eBird for researchers, conservation groups, and the public. The more the platform succeeds, the better the commons gets.
